There are many stories about how coffee became the world’s favourite drink – but the one we’re about to tell, is how it really happened. More than 2,000 years ago, a healer called Omar was banished from his home in Yemen in the port of Al-Mokha, at the edge of the Red Sea.
He had tried to marry a princess, but as a lowly worker, it was thought he had ideas above his station. So, he crossed over the sea into Djibouti and walked for days, occasionally helped by the kindness of other travellers.
One evening, not long after he reached the Ethiopian highlands, weary and hungry, Omar searched for food. But, all he could find, were some red berries, which were inedible! In frustration, Omar threw the berries into his fire.
Not long after, a deep and enticing aroma from the burning embers made him scoop out the berries and boil them. The concoction was rich and satisfying. Omar also found he was no longer weary. In fact, he felt invigorated! So, he took plants for his magic berries back to Yemen where he was hailed a hero after the people also felt the benefits of this delicious drink.
